Air Quality Assessments for New Developments
Local and Unitary Authorities have an obligation to manage air quality within their boundaries and, as such, may require Air Quality Assessments to be carried out as part of the planning process for new developments.
An assessment may be required if there are concerns that the development will cause extra air pollution in construction or use or expose the users of the new building to poor air quality.
HBI Air Quality Assessments may include some or all of the following:
- Reviewing relevant Local Authority air quality reports
- Assessment of Local Authority air pollution monitoring data with respect to the new development
- Modelling using the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) screening method
- Modelling using the WinOSPM Operational Street Pollution Model
- Monitoring of relevant pollutants at the new development site
- Guidance and recommendations on measures to reduce the impact of poor air quality on users of the new development
